He was unfortunate to have a negligent first handler who failed to
notice an injury to his elbow during intense training / working
exercises. Being young and anxious to be the best police dog, he
learned to compensate with his other legs and continued serving
the police department. His luck changed when Officer Morris
became his new handler and after noticing his altered gait took
him to Dr. Vargas for evaluation. After radiographs confirmed
severe osteoarthritis on both of his elbows, he was retired. His new
handler adopted him as a pet. At the tender age of three, Sabo
became a crippled hero.
.
His new family quickly realized how osteoarthritis affected Sabo's
quality of life. In order for him to be able to run, play and get up
and down stairs, he needed help from non steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs. His veterinarian recommended regular
blood work, a special diet, supplements, and rehabilitation
therapy. Considering German Shepherds life span is about twelve
years, he faces many years of health issues.
The bond between an officer and a K-9 is deep and though he
puts a financial strain on his new family, they love him and want to
provide him with the health care he needs.
